Scenario and discussion – Music festival

You are at a music festival with a group of your friends. You are all drinking alcohol, but not drinking heavily. A couple of friends have chosen to take ecstasy that they bought off a guy near the toilets. You choose not to. It is 30oC, and you have all been dancing for about 3 hours. There is no shade, but there is a misting machine near the stage. You all move into the crowd, closer to the stage to get to the mist. One of your friends collapses. You struggle to drag her off the ground, but with the help of your friends you move her out of the crowd. You are not sure whether to get the attention of a St John’s First Aid volunteer. You are worried about telling them about the use of drugs and alcohol by your friend. What action do you take?

  • Get the attention of the St John’s volunteer. Tell them all of your friend’s details, including what drugs they have taken and what they’ve been drinking. Call an ambulance and your friend’s parents to advise them of the situation.

  • Get the attention of the St John’s volunteer. Tell the St John’s volunteer what drugs your friend has taken and what they have been drinking. Wait for instructions from them as to what to do next. Follow their advice. This may include taking your friend home.

  • Get the attention of the St John’s volunteer. Tell the St John’s volunteer some of what your friend has been drinking or taken. Monitor your friend over the course of the day.

  • Get the attention of the St John’s volunteer. Tell the St John’s volunteer that your friend is just dehydrated.

Discuss the risks and possible consequences of the following actions:

  • Asking people in the crowd if they think your friend looks alright. Returning to the crowd and continuing to dance. Leave your friend sitting nearby on their own. Returning to your friend once you are bored with the band. Buying them another alcoholic drink.
