Scenario and discussion - Under-aged drinking

You are heading out with a large group of your friends to celebrate the end of the school year. A couple of your friends are under-age, but they manage to get into the pub undetected. Some of the people in the group decide that you will all buy drinks for your under-age friends. As the night progresses, your group of friends is enjoying the buzz from the alcohol, but one of your under-age friends has been particularly affected and is starting to slur and occasionally put their head down on the table. What action do you take at this point?

  • Notify the security and bartender that your friend is under-age and that all your friends have been purchasing alcohol illegally. Ring his/her parents to come and pick him/her up.

  • Get some water for your under-age friend, take them outside for some air and try to convince your friends not to buy him/her any more alcohol. Monitor your friend to ensure his/her safety.

  • Tell your friends that you will buy his/her alcohol from now on so that you can monitor how drunk he/she is.

  • Make a few jokes about how drunk your friend is and hope your mates will take the hint.

Discuss the risks and possible consequences of the following action:

  • Keep buying drinks for your mate until he throws up all over the place and passes out. You have to call his parents to come and pick him up and they take him to the hospital to get his stomach pumped.
